dreams on wheels

Showcasing sustainable transportation.

The capacity of the CtdnS to plan and execute a long-term marketing project has been demonstrated in our 'Dreams on Wheels: Destination Calgary' campaign. Bringing this bicycle-themed exhibit to Calgary was the goal of this winning campaign which also had the objective of creating a coalition of community organizations and institutions supporting the premise that More People Cycling More Often is good for Calgary. In order to host this international smash hit cycling exhibit in Calgary, Calgary was thrown in competition with 'world-class' cities that are the very definition of 'world-class' and are household names: Moscow, Sydney, Tokyo, Paris and New York. The compelling case for Calgary as a host city has been the very community coalition that has emerged to bring Dreams on Wheels to Canada and the spirit of participation that marked the 1988 Winter Olympics. Anchored by sponsorship of the Royal Danish Embassy in Ottawa, the 'Dreams on Wheels: Destinaton Calgary' was supported by the Office of the Premier, Mayor of Calgary, numerous eduational institutions, cycling organizations led by the Alberta Bicycle Association, several companies and community groups.

The 'Dreams on Wheels' multimedia exhibit was commissioned by the Danish Foreign Affairs Ministry and created by the Paris-based Etikstudio to showcase urban design efforts to develop more sustainable cities and municipal efforts to support cycling as a popular and viable mode of transportation. It underscores conscious urban design choices that transformed the car-choked Copenhagen of the seventies. It is currently on a world tour to publicize the United Nations Climate Change conference in Copenhagen in December 2009 (COP15). For the record, Copenhagen is farther north than Calgary.

This travelling exhibit features the photographs of Mikael Colville-Andersen.
