August 23rd bike fest draws close to a thousand visitors
The Calgary tour de Nuit Society hosted Calgary's first-ever Bike Festival on August 23, 2009 in conjunction with our 'Ride the Road' Tour. Sunny skies and warm temperatures were the order of the day as hundreds came down to check out Fugro-Roadware's ARAN technology for analyzing road surface conditions, tech talk with mechanics from several area retailers, take in the music of 'Wildcard' or try to win one of several big ticket items such as: a bike trip for four down the Icefields Parkway courtesy of Hostelling International, a Chariot Carrier courtesy of Calgary's Chariot Carrier Inc., a Trek FX 7.2 commuter bike courtesy of Trek Bikes and the Calgary tour de nuit Society, a Trek Soho courtesy of Ridley's Cycle or a Daho courtesy of Dahon Distributor, Chariot Carriers.
Calgary Bicycle Track League was present with track bikes and willing to explain to interested passers-by how to stop one of these bikes.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer was also present to provide tips on a winter excercise routine and encourage cyclists to participate in its fundraising efforts to support cancer research.
The Festival was 100% solar powered when the festival site manager discovered the power had not been turned on in the park. The stage, band and electrical requirements for food vendors were effortlessly met with a small solar array on SkyFire Energy's mobile solar display.
The Calgary Bike Festival was held in the West Prominade Park in the vicinity of 8th St. and 3rd Ave. SW.
